Creative Thinking in the Workplace

Monday, November 30th, 2009

One of the best things a company manager can do for their team of employees, and for the overall success of the company is to hold regular brain storming meetings, wherein all of the staff are involved in either coming up with solutions to challenges, or coming up with new and innovative ways of creating a new project or a new project.  This is the kind of active leadership training that is a working vision, with practical outcomes.  This is a learning on the job type of experience that not only serves to provide that training, but it will bring staff members together as it will now be obvious, that yes they really are working on the same team, for the same company.

This kind of interaction is great for the involvement of those in different departments, as when everyone understands the jobs that are being done in the other areas of the company, they will better be able to communicate with those other people they may not have day to day contact with.  Another goal of this kind of collective meeting, is that many ideas are generated at once, and then evaluated later after thought and consideration.  This is any effective way that can be used to solve any kind of situation, and is also effective whether working with small or large groups of people.  While the meeting do require a moderator and organization, there should be no boundaries for the statement of ideas, people must be allowed to let their thoughts freely flow in a constructive manner.

This is one form of staff and corporate training wherein the fewer rules necessary, the better.  People should not feel inhibited in their suggestions, and should never think that their idea may not be good enough.  The purpose of the meeting is that one idea may be built upon, and a solution may be reached by combined thoughts, and that solution may not have presented itself if where just one person sitting in an office searching their brain for the answers.   By bringing people together, creative solutions are not only found, but incredible teams are built, ensuring the future success of the company.

Sajith Shankar and Kerala

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Kerala is one of the most interesting places in India, and is a terrific spot to visit for any traveler looking to see part of this magnificent country.  With options as spectacular as spice gardens, and secret beaches, Kerala resorts are a splendid option for accommodations for travelers looking to enjoy a taste of paradise.   There are many worlds that come together in a resort, where the local flavor is reflected in the lodgings, providing a sumptuous vision of life that might not exist anywhere else on earth.  All the worry about filling an itinerary goes away when everything is right there for you to enjoy.

But there are still plenty of opportunities to take advantage of the place, and sight-seeing here is wonderful, and always very exciting.  It’s a terrifically interesting culture, and it’s one of the few places in India where the matrilineal system of social organization still holds in some places, and because of the mother-line being revered, can be a better situation for women in general.  There are artists who take up the themes of gender in their work, but none is as prominent in Kerala culture, perhaps, as Sajith Shankar.

She was born here, and educated in art here, before living for a time with her husband, Ravi Shankar, who is also a famous artist, in Chennai.  She has also traveled extensively in Europe, and has work shown all over the world.  Her paintings are very distinctive in their style, avoiding strict realism altogether, and occasionally moving toward pure abstraction, but there usually are human figures in the work, and usually these are female.  She combines mythical and spiritual realities to make social commentary in her work, and also uses a great deal of introspection.  Her self-portraits are particularly compelling, but her acrylic and charcoal art works are always interesting and evocative.

TransGlobe and Civic Responsibility

Friday, November 27th, 2009

It’s a pleasure to grow up in a neighborhood with history, where you can trace the lineage of some of the families who live there.  You can sometimes hear the neighbors telling stories about what the block looked like a generation or two ago, and hear stories about the people who used to populate the area.  It’s a fine feeling, and one that you can’t find everywhere.  Fortunately, in Canada, there are many neighborhoods with truly distinctive character, and they’re populated with distinctive characters these days as well.  It’s a place with history, where people have been living here for hundreds, and even thousands, of years.  In contemporary times, however, forgetting comes easy, and we’re starting to move around more frequently, and it’s not easy to get to know the area.

Fortunately, with TransGlobe Property Management, there’s a history in Canada, and the staff lives and works here, too, just like you do.  There’s a fantastic selection of buildings, for commercial as well as residential purposes, and it’s easy to use their database, to find some excellent options for places to work and to make a new home.  Their experience here also means that they have a vested interest in the buildings as well as the neighborhood, so you’re not moving into a place without a history, or without anyone to help you find your way around.

Canada has a spectacular reputation for civic responsibility already, and it’s always nice to be somewhere where you can ask your neighbors for advice, and where you can even offer help to people when they’re lost, or in trouble.  This is how we grow a neighborhood, and how we can continue the project that our ancestors left for us here.  Companies like TransGlobe Property Management operate with that same level of investment in place, and the commitment to the neighborhood doesn’t end after you’ve moved in and begun your new operations, or started to get used to the neighborhood.  Their customer service is excellent, and they even participate actively in community events, like parades, charitable fundraisers, and many other activities that demonstrate a real commitment to helping make life better.  It’s a fantastic place to live already, and our active participation can help the engines to move us further along.

Silver Tombstone

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

Arizona is a vast state of rich American style history. People come from all over the world to experience as much as they can of the great cowboy days. The early pioneers, ranchers and outlaws are a major part of the American experience. Tombstone is an old Arizona town that has retained much of it’s old buildings and stories. It was founded by Ed Schieffelin a prospector who paid a visit to Camp Huachuca. He was a part of an expedition scouting out the local native, Chiricahua Apache Indians. The name came from the fact that the other men of the troops would tees Schieffelin for a hobby. Apparently, Ed used to like to collect rocks. He would go out into the dangerous area in search of pieces to add to his collection and the men would tell him the only stone he would find was his tombstone. It a brilliant moment Ed did find a special stone. He found Silver. So he went on to name his first mine The Tombstone.

Didn’t take long before everyone heard about Ed’s discovery. The Camp became a township for a near by Silver mine. Everyone came and set up shop. You had the prospectors, cowboys, lawyers, business people, homesteaders, speculators and of course the cowboys and gunmen. In 1879 the town site was laid out and was originally called Goose Flats. It was renamed later to Tombstone after Ed made his first big claim. The town grew and the records only counted 7,500 white males over the age of 21. When you added in the women, children and Chinese slaves the town was actually between 15,000 and 20,000 people. It was once the fastest growing city from San Francisco to Saint Louis. The locals had a hundred or more saloons to drink in as well as many restaurants. The red light district was busy and everyday life was hoping too. Now, visitors can pick a room at one of the finest luxury hotels Arizona has become known for take a trip to Tombstone. There are many famous gunfights to hear about.

The Best Tan Ever in Costa Brava

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

Just to prove to you that traveling is all fun and games, I have the deepest tan of my life. It’s quite pleasant to look at to say the very least. I’ve been laying in the sun for the past few days and my arms, neck, ears, face, torso, legs and feet all look very savory. Evett, had done pretty good to put up with me going on about my gorgeous tan, especially when I take a shower. I feel like an exotic Spanish celebrity. Evett has plugged up her ears when we go to sleep for the night, but that doesn’t stop me from talking incessantly.

Anyways, enough about me and my beautiful tan. We are currently located at Costa Brava and we plan to stay a little bit longer, our Costa Brava hotel is only happy to accommodate us for as long as we please. A few days ago, we took our rented bikes out for a spin around the Bay of Roses. On our way to Empuries, which is this ancient Greek, Roman site, we decided to take a detour down this dirt path. It when off from the main road and away from all the exhaust fumes made by the passing cars and buses.

We stopped for water and caught something out of the corner of our eyes. We turned to look and we both jumped at the sight of one of the biggest snakes either of us have ever seen. It was crossing our path only a meter ahead. It was at least 4 meters long and was green. It was as thick as my arm. We were glad we stopped for a water break when we did. We would’ve ran right into it with our bikes.

It’s always fascinating to stand where a civilization lived over 2 thousand years ago, but it is pretty hard to stand up to the standards of the Forum, the Colosseum in Rome or Pompeii. We didn’t hang around long in the ruins of Empuries. On our way back, the winds picked up and we had to double our effort to get back to our hotel. It really was quite a struggle, we each were being tossed about and one time we had to get off our bikes or get blown down! Eventually, with diligence and persistence, we made it back. A good thing too, the storm got stronger and fierce. Listening to it in our hotel room felt like a Led Zeppelin concert.

Rudra in Singapore

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Singapore has a splendid reputation in the world as a uniquely cosmopolitan urban center, offering a sensibility that is firmly rooted in the present, and with an eye on the future as well.  It’s a fantastic cultural and financial center, where the people who live and work here understand the need for efficiency and personal style, and know how to put things in context.  There are many different ways of seeing any particular world-view, and because of its history as a port town, Singapore has a sense for reading ideas and thoughts from multiple perspectives.  This makes it a particularly spectacular place to see live art, and it’s also a great place to do business.    For the moments when art and business intertwine, Singapore is uniquely capable of accommodating complex negotiations in a way that makes them simple in hindsight.  It’s a spectacular place.

It’s come into its own culturally in recent years, having proven to the world that it has something to offer, and actually coming out at the forefront of new art and technology.  For years, however, it’s been a very stable place financially speaking, and is a particularly excellent choice for a private bank.  Singapore offers a sense of service and efficiency that no other place can come close to touching.  It also offers a host of lively entertainments, and you can find just about anything you’re looking for here, along with some fantastic innovations.  In terms of music, there are many spectacular varieties, from folk music in many different traditions, classical, experimental, and lots of pop.  There is also metal in Singapore.

One of the most prominent bands in this regard is Rudra.  They’re not just metal, but Vedic metal, having invented their own genre over the years.  They began in 1992, and took the name of the Hindu deity of destruction, as a way of highlighting their music’s aggressive character.  Rudra is certainly aggressive, and many albums later, they’re still one of the most popular metal acts in Asia.  They’re also extraordinarily innovative, combining classical Indian rhythms with their rather intense metal stylings, to make a music that speaks to multiple cultures in multiple idioms, and makes interesting comments of the world at large.

French Quarter and Bourbon Street During Marti Gras in New Orleans

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Jody and Sasha had been trying to get to Mardi Gras in New Orleans for over five years. Well, that was on an individual basis, though together they had been making a joint effort for the last three years and something would always fall through at the last minute. Either Jody would have to work, she had a full time position with a cell phone company and worked on call as an emergency group home care provider. This made it exceptionally difficult for her to secure any guaranteed time off. Meanwhile Sasha always seemed to be in the throws of some passionate relationship and always seemed to be at a point of crisis when the season hits. And considering that it lasts about two weeks every year, this seems like it would be difficult to manage.

However, six years ago they actually managed to work everything out and even though Sasha threatened to cancel their plans at the last minute Jody basically dragged her onto the plane and made her call her dead beat boyfriend from their room in one of the luxury hotels New Orleans to break up. And although Jody was worried about having to be the crying shoulder for the next three days, once she got her friend out onto Bourbon Street it seems as if the fly by night boy friend had never even existed.

Finally the two friends were there in New Orleans watching masked and costumed people dancing by at all hours. They would wake up in the morning and head uptown or the mid-city section to get the best views of the major parades. Sometimes two or three large beautiful parades would make their way through the streets and exuberant crowds partied and ran alongside them. Later in the afternoon or early evening they would wander down to the French Quarter and usually Bourbon Street for the all night revelry. This was truly and amazing time for both of them and they thought back on that trip with a since of bittersweet nostalgia on the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

Installing a Hot Tub on a Deck

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Hot tubs have been gaining in popularity for years.  There are so many options and so many of those options fall withing the range of most people’s budgets these days, especially the ones to be found at choosehottubsdirect.com.  The health benefits are amazing, the relaxation benefits are amazing.  The only thing one really has to decide on is where to have them installed.  Inside or outside you will love the fact that you took this step in personal care, and entertainment.  What is funner than having a backyard barbecue or party, and being able to jump in the hot tub for a bit of a soak?  If one’s backyard is small one option is to build a deck in which to install your hot tub or your spa.  Depending on your preferences there are a couple of ways in which you can go about deciding where to place your new spa.  Building a free standing deck will allow you to utilize the space of the hot tub, the side of the tub for sitting on even when you are not inside the tub itself.  There should be a secure platform and this can be created by some wood and some concrete.

One thing to keep in mind is the weight of your hot tub and constructing a deck that will be able to continuously support that weight.  When hot tubs are filled with water they can weight as much as 3,500 pounds, maybe more depending on the size.  You will also need to consider where your electrical outlets are located, as to build a deck too far from them will cause your backyard to have cables and wires running through it.  Many people consider having these decks professionally built, but with some time and some effort, the do-it-your-selfers will greatly enjoy the fact that they designed their deck, and changed the design of the entire back yard, all by themselves.  Many people choose a simpler route to installing their hot tubs, such as digging a hole into the ground and building the deck around it.  This is the more popular approach.  Which ever you decide, you will be grateful for years to come that you finally took the step, and can enjoy your own personal spa treatment at your leisure.

Activities for Children During Family BBQs

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

In this part of the country, the Southwestern desert, we are just now coming upon the perfect weather for a family barbecue.  And because it is now the end of the summer season, families are finding that there are many bbq grills on sale, allowing them to upgrade, or to just purchase different models for different purposes.  Nothing beats the flavor of using a real charcoal grill, but nothing beats the convenience of a gas grill.  The inexpensive alternatives and options have made it so that people will have the freedom and the choice for their particular backyard party.

Preparing for a backyard meal can be time-consuming, depending on how creative the recipes are going to be, and once the grill is hot, parents often need to find ways to keep children occupied.  There are many games and activities that will keep the young ones occupied while you are preparing the perfect meal, and to keep them safe from the heat of the grill.  My sister’s favorite way to keep her kids occupied is by creating a treasure hunt.  This holds their interest for long than games such as “Duck-Duck-Goose”, and she finds that she can place the treasure items far from the grill.  This game came in handy during her son’s five year birthday party, as she managed to prepare food for twenty other five years, and they were kept busy and excited during the pre-meal stages.

For her older daughters birthday party, she created a different kind of game, a bit like Trivial Pursuit, with balloons.  The night before she wrote questions on tiny strips of paper, blew up the balloons and stuck the questions inside.  The girls then popped the balloons, and if they could answer the question, they remained in the game.  This was not only exciting in that their was a prize for the winner, but popping balloons is a terrifying activity for some, and it kept the girls occupied and entertained while my sister was grilling their hot-dogs and hamburgers.  These backyard games are great for keeping kids busy while you are working in the kitchen, and standing over the grill.

Essentials of Customer Service

Monday, November 9th, 2009

We have all at some time or another been on the receiving end of bad customer service.  It may have been in your local coffee shop, when you have returned an item to a department store or when you have been put on hold for half an hour during a customer service phone call.

In your business you want to make your customers happy.  This goes without saying.  However it is easier said than done.  You and your staff need  to show responsiveness and empathy in all your dealing with customers.  This will encourage them to repeat their business as well as enhancing your reputation through word of mouth.
The basics of good customer service is to show courtesy and manners when dealing with clients.  This will aid retention and increase the amounts of new customers.  A satisfied customer will tell others of their experiences (average of 2-3) while a dissatisfied one will tell many more (average 8-10).

The key to complaint handling is to respond quickly.  Customers only want to be dealt with fairly and promptly.  Look on complaints as an opportunity.  An opportunity to fix the problem and increase new and returning customers.

Start with a dedicated vision of your customer service policy and share this with all staff.  Customer service software will help employees to respond quickly and efficiently with all requests.  This is true for all those who deal with clients including sales and customer service.  Those staff should have authority to resolve problems quickly and they should always follow up to ensure satisfaction.  This can be done by phone or email.  This will help the customer to feel that they have been listened to and understood.
