Buick Park Avenue Silhouette
27 March 2010
Well the first generation of the Buick Park Avenue was between 1991 and 1996. General Motors was the maker and it was sold by the Buick division. This is a full size car that came from the previous idea in the Buick Electra until it made a name for itself in 1991. They were usually equipped with a 3.9 L 3800 Series V6 with special options that included the supercharged version that came along in 1992. The super charged model has some great acceleration even though it was so big. If you own one of these old models you may be familiar with the buick park avenue repair manual for the easy maintenance tips. There is often a need for a good service manual when owning an older vehicle. It is still the less expensive way to own a car but they do need more attention along the way. The Buick, however, is a pretty solid built car. It may not ever make it into the Barrett Jackson for auction but it will get you around town and across the country in comfort and style.
Have you taken your classic Buick across country yet? There are some fantastic drive to take depending on where you start. On the west coast there is the must drive Highway 1. Then there is the famous Route 66 that will get you from the Santa Monica Pier to Chicago with some really great places to check out in between. While on the east coast try making time to drive the Blue Ridge Parkway which take you along the Appalachian Mountains. There are some really beautiful areas in Virginia’s Shenandoah and the Great Smoky Mountains. How about the Overseas Highway of Florida that takes you from the mainland of Florida to the Keys over the ocean. You may have to stop and get in a scuba dive while you are in the area.
Niles Canyon Railway Near Fremont
23 March 2010
As the spring and summer kick in across the west coast it is time for people to think about some activities they haven’t done before. While staying in Fremont California there is a special vintage day trip that can be taken to the small town of Sunol. Find a great downtown fremont hotel and find the old vintage bus that will take you to the near by train station of the Niles Canyon Railway . The Niles Coach Line, which as a number of 1957 buses, is were the history trip begins and can be caught at one of the many stops along Niles Boulevard. It will take you through the historical areas of Niles and get you to the Niles Canyon Railway Station. When you board a vintage steam engine train it is like being in another time. They leave on time and so get there early. It takes about an hour and fifteen minutes to travel round trip from the Niles station to Sunol. It runs along part of the first railways built in 1860 that connected San Francisco to San Jose and then move out to the rest of the country. This rail route was the main route going to and from the San Francisco Bay. The California Pacific Railroad came along later and layed track for a smaller distance going from Oakland to Sacramento and the Niles became a more local train. When you pull into Sunol there is a train museum that one can wonder through and learn more about the history of the train. If there is time and a ride Sunol has some vineyards to visit as well as some horse back riding. There is also the Sunol Regional Wilderness Area that has areas to hike and picnic that is surrounded by lot of small creatures like turtles in the pond. Check with the East Bay Regional Park District for more information on the parks features. Even if the train is all one does it is a nice relaxing day on a piece of American history.

Amarillo Idol
17 March 2010
American Idol is in its 9th season. Yes, nine! I must admit I was hooked on the first 4, but after that I lost interest. I could no longer stomach the fake sarcasm and love/hate relationship between Paula and Simon. (Paula I still love you, just not as a judge). I was skeptical of this season, but decided to give it a chance, and I am so glad I did! This season of American Idol is the best ever. With great stars like Lacey Brown, I am sure that it will not be another pop bust. Lacey Brown has a place in Amarillo Texas , a great place to visit . She has been one of my favorites from the beginning! I love her rendition of Landslide by Fleetwood Mack, even though the judges criticized her for it. I am amazed at her performance every time. Singing in a small church in amarillo , has really prepared her! I cannot believe that the whole group of women this year is so strong. And can we talk about the judging?
The judges have finally found their balance. Simon is not the pig headed monster that he once was when trying to balance Paula Abdul’s over indulgent sweetness. And the other Paula is actually constructive! Who would have thought that the judges on American idol could actually give constructive criticism all wrapped up in a lovely little package? Randy and Ellen add a nice balance of humor and lightness. I must say I am so glad that every other word out of Randy’s mouth is no longer “Dog”!
Some of my other favorites? ‘The girl with the dreads’! Crystal rocked the house with her rendition of Tracey Chapman’s ‘give me one reason’. Not only is that one of my favorite songs, but her voice and style made it come alive all over again for me! It was like hearing a new song for the first time and falling in love! I love her style and her energy. ‘The Little One’, Siobhan, belted out Aretha Franklin the week before and I was left with my jaw on the floor! How could such a big note come out of such a little girl! I was truly and utterly impressed!
As for the guys, I must admit, I have not seen one performance! Sorry guys, I think the girls are all over you this season and you better watch your backs! Lilly, Siobhan, Crystal, and Didi, you guys got it going on!
Mamet’s New York
14 March 2010
There are some people in the world that we all just imagine have to be from New York. Woody Allen is one, Joan Rivers and Richard Pryor are others, and David Mamet must be a New Yorker himself. He talks fast, in a pretty spectacularly catchy rhythm, and he has strong opinions. He seems like a New Yorker, in dress, in manner, and in his remarkable impatience. Interestingly, he is from Chicago, and maybe most people already know that, but it certainly came as a shock here, and it’s hard to figure out why it was a shock. Going back and looking at the writer and his work, it still makes sense that he must be a New Yorker even though the facts don’t support it at all.
In many of his earlier plays, where moderately successful characters seemed like the types you’d run into outside a New York hotel , people with great ideas and plans, and a whole lot to say. They sounded like people who must be from New York, because they were so smart, interesting, terribly funny, and terribly cynical. New York or Chicago, maybe. The Chicago Mamet has earned the respect, and often scorn, of his peers in his own generation, as well as the ones before and after, because he has a remarkable gift.
It might be that Mamet’s characters are driven by the same hopes and desires that carry so many of us in this city. That makes him an honorary New Yorker for sure, along with the very developed dark side, with a wide array of secret passions, and secret stories, that we can also certainly relate to here. It also probably has something to do with the fact that every time he writes something, it’s produced all over Broadway and off-Broadway, and his TV and film work is so extensive that we sometimes get to hear Mamet speak even when we’re aware of it. And perhaps even more, the two cities have a lot more in common than anyone is comfortable to admit.
Making a Budget to Get Out of Debt
05 March 2010
For people who have been living under loan debt for a long time this could be the worst time to be worrying about where you are going to be getting the money to pay it off. As people lose their jobs left and right, it can be harder to live on the money you have now. This is why I suggest making a budget and sticking to it. This is a very easy process and it can help you pay off your loans faster.
The first thing you will want to do is grab a copy of your bank statement and become familiar with what you are spending each month and what you are bringing home. Your ideal budget should give you 60% of your income for the essentials such as groceries, utilities and housing. If you are spending a lot more on this, you may want to look into why. There are many easy ways to bring some of these things down, such as buying raw ingredients and using them to cook more often, or turning off lights and appliances when you are done in a room. This may not lower your expenses down all the way to 60%, but it should help out some. From what you have after that, try to set aside 10% of your income for paying back loans . Knowing that you are setting this money aside and that you are not allowed to touch it can help a lot psychologically in not spending that money on the fun stuff. The next 10% is set aside for short term savings for irregular expenses such as gifts for people, property taxes, magazine subscriptions, etc. Anything left over can be spent on fun stuff such as movies and going out to eat.
If you spend your money wisely you can get out from under debt fast. That does not mean that problems won’t emerge and you should be prepared with some extra savings to take care of them right away.
