As the spring and summer kick in across the west coast it is time for people to think about some activities they haven’t done before. While staying in Fremont California there is a special vintage day trip that can be taken to the small town of Sunol. Find a great downtown fremont hotel and find the old vintage bus that will take you to the near by train station of the Niles Canyon Railway . The Niles Coach Line, which as a number of 1957 buses,  is were the history trip begins and can be caught at one of the many stops along Niles Boulevard. It will take you through the historical areas of Niles and get you to the Niles Canyon Railway Station. When you board a vintage steam engine train it is like being in another time. They leave on time and so get there early. It takes about an hour and fifteen minutes to travel round trip from the Niles station to Sunol. It runs along part of the first railways built in 1860 that connected San Francisco to San Jose and then move out to the rest of the country. This rail route was the main route going to and from the San Francisco Bay. The California Pacific Railroad came along later and layed track for a smaller distance going from Oakland to Sacramento and the Niles became a more local train. When you pull into Sunol there is a train museum that one can wonder through and learn more about the history of the train. If there is time and a ride Sunol has some vineyards to visit as well as some horse back riding. There is also the Sunol Regional Wilderness Area that has areas to hike and picnic that is surrounded by lot of small creatures like turtles in the pond. Check with the East Bay Regional Park District for more information on the parks features. Even if the train is all one does it is a nice relaxing day on a piece of American history.
