I was walking down the a more populated street of Fort Collins, when this old farmer stopped me and pointed to Longs Peak and asked me is I see the man in the mountain? I couldn’t help but be stunned and dumbfounded. The old farmer just grinned at me and stretched out his arm, pointed and once again asked if I see the man in the mountain. I looked very hard up at Longs Peak for anything that resembles a man, anything, and finally I had to respond that I didn’t see anything resembling a man.

The old farmer just laughed and laughed, I thought maybe I was the bunt of a joke, but that wasn’t the case. He then pointed out the inverted pyramid of snow that is just beneath the top of the mountain, which still didn’t look like a man to me, and the old farmer said the all the farmers used to watch the arms, and that is how they knew how much irrigation water they had left for the year. He continued saying that the shorter the arms get, the shorter the water supply gets, and the sooner it will run dry.

He then looked at me long and hard, waiting for me to say something, but I didn’t what to let him know that back in the 40′s, The Big Thompson Project, which created dams and diversions, put his Longs Peak Man to rest. So, I kept my mouth shut and smiled. He just grunted and walked off. I watched to see if he stopped anybody else on the sidewalk and proceed to ask them if they see the man in the mountain, but he didn’t.

As I walked back to an area hotel , where I was staying, I couldn’t help but look west to see if I could somehow make out any shape of a man on Longs Peak, but for the life of me, I could not.
