The History of Pawn Shops
30 July 2010
The need for fast cash is not a new development in the world. There is certainly an increase in activity, and a rise in new pawn shops, during economic downturns, and it’s difficult to avoid looking at the Great Depression as one of the big blossoming moments for pawn shops in this country. As people were losing their liquid assets quickly, they needed to start figuring out how to sell their valuable objects in order to make ends meet. But the idea of a pawn shop isn’t necessarily based on fast cash, it’s rather based on the idea that things will get better soon, and the items can be bought back.
In today’s economy, it’s more likely that people are looking to sell their unwanted jewelry, or to Sell Gold , in order to meet goals, and buy the things that they really want and need. It’s a new way of looking at a very old custom. The first pawn shops can be fairly reasonably dated back 3,000 years, to China , when brokers were willing to offer loans in exchange for goods that would be held for a certain period of time. It extended into the Greek and Roman cultures, and the success of the industry, as well as the benefits for the customers, has helped it to endure over time.
Accommodating Special Requests in Construction
24 July 2010
Designing the perfect home usually doesn’t just include where to put the windows and how big to make each room, it also includes things like making sure that there is enough storage space, or making sure that the perfect blinds are on the windows. There are a number of companies like Next Day Blinds that aim to partner with builders to make it easier for them to order the perfect blinds for a house that is in progress so that it can be perfect for the client when it is completed.
While it would seem like it should be easy for most builders to find blinds for any given window, there are a number of types of windows that tend to need custom blinds. If one room is supposed to be an entertainment center, that room might need to have blackout blinds which may or may not be motorized depending on the wishes of the client. This is not something that can just be picked up at most stores, which is why a specialty store like Next Day Blinds is needed. Items like storage are easier for construction workers to accommodate because it is something that can be built into the house if it is done right.
Paraglider Boxing at Ceasar’s Palace
21 July 2010
Boxing is one of the most interesting sports, with its own band of supporters whose fanaticism can sometimes rival that of soccer fans. Rarely, however, are the venues large enough where the crowd can get out of control, but there is a level of energy that’s higher than most other spectator events. Las Vegas in particular is a place where the fans are more worked up than most cities, due to the high energy of the town itself. It’s not minimized at all by the money that can be at stake.
In fact, the combination of gambling and boxing together is itself something that can be very exhilarating, and there’s no feeling quite like it. Imagine, then, watching a match at Caesars Palace , where the unexpected can always happen, and often does.
The year is 1993, and it’s a fight between Holyfield and Bowe . The fight has already been as exciting as these things can get. In the 7th round, however, a man came in on a parachute, powered by a large fan, and landed right in the middle of the ring. He was making a public protest about violence in sports, and thought this would be a good moment to get attention. He was right, and he also suffered a few blows from the onlookers, who decided this was a good moment to get his attention.
There’s not always this kind of excitement happening at Las Vegas hotels , but every night of the week there’s something interesting happening. It’s enough to keep people coming back, and sometimes a boxing match is better without the parachute.
Choices in Baby Bedding Materials and Designs
19 July 2010
Baby bedding is an essential, in fact probably the most important element in any nursery. And while its style and visual appeal will enhance the atmosphere and appeal to the senses of the adults in the house, its comfort and warmth will create a sense of security and well-being for the infant it is serving. Ideally, parents will want to choose the bedding materials that will satisfy both the needs of the baby and the interests of the adults. Their cost and ease of cleaning are also factors that the parents will consider but will mean little to the tiny infant using them.
Beyond these standard factors that are important to most parents across the board, there are some basic lifestyle and personal interest factors that affect the choice of bedding materials parents will use. For the green family , there are some extremely attractive, comfortable and high quality environmental bedding materials available, and this is a growing choice for new parents. Additionally, there is a diverse selection of styles in materials and also the furniture that will hold them. Matching the nursery furniture with the crib and bedding materials is important for many parents and there are all sorts of interesting accessories that can be added as well. Regardless of the specific needs you may have for your baby’s blankets, pillows , pads and other bedding items, the infant’s comfort and security should always be at the top of the list.
The Origin of Halloween Wigs and Costumes
17 July 2010
What is the festival of Samhain, and how did it transform into the day now known as Halloween ? While the custom of going trick-or-treating, carving Jack O’ Lanterns, and bobbing for apples is a secular celebration, it was once connected to a traditional activity meant to celebrate the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. Ancient pagans used this time in order to prepare for winter, taking in the needed supplies for the cold months.
Ancient Gaels thought that on October 31st the borders between the worlds of the living and the dead crossed over each other, allowing the dead to return to live and create havoc with the agricultural products, either damaging the crops or making them sick.
The festival of Samhain would usually involve a bonfire, which attracted insects, and, in turn, bats — perhaps a reason why bats are associated with the festivities. Masks and costumes were worn to mimic or appease evil spirits, thus preventing their attacks.
Eventually, this practice turned into “trick-or-treating,” an activity for children, who make their way from house to house in masks and Halloween costume wigs , asking for candy by using the phrase, “trick-or-treat.”
The custom began in Ireland and Scotland, and then came to North America along with Irish and Scottish immigrants in the 1800s. Within a few decades, the custom transferred to the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. It’s also practiced in Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.
An Environmental Treat in Miami
14 July 2010
Miami’s Biscayne Bay, there is a great place to visit, the Deering Estate . This 444 acre is located along the edge of the Bay and is an environmental, archeological and historical preserve. From the Tequesta Indians to the pioneers of the 1890s to the Deerings, this area of Cutler was considered a prime spot for settlement back in the day.
This unique, natural setting is home to many endangered land forests, plants and tropical hammocks. Today, you can tour the historic Stone House and the Richmond Cottage. Or you can take canoe tours to butterfly walks and guided nature hikes; the Deering Estate has enough diverse activities that the entire family will find something to enjoy.
The Estate is part of the Miami-Dade County Park and Recreation Department, so there are many boutique Miami hotels nearby to accommodate any needs required. The Deering Estates offers daily tours not only of the Stone House and the Richmond Cottage, but of the lush natural areas where 50,000 year old fossilized bones have been found. It also features cultural and educational facilities that offer classes and programs for children and adults. Most of the classes involve learning about botany, history, and the environment.
General admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children under 15. There are special tours that have additional costs, but highly recommended. You’ll find the Deering Estates at 16701 Southwest 72nd Avenue. This is a ‘must-see’ for anyone visiting Miami.
While Plymouth, Massachusetts is well known for its historical significance to this country and even its name is extremely symbolic and representative of the role it played, there are also some contemporary aspects of the city that make it a particularly enticing tourist destination. And it is true that the majority of people who visit this city do so to tour some of the historic buildings and landmarks, they are frequently surprised by all the contemporary attractions the city has to offer. Any hotel Plymouth will be able to guide its guests not only to famous landmarks such as the Mayflower II and Plymouth Rock, but also to some of the dynamic contemporary attractions such as the Philharmonic Orchestra and the Pirate Cruises.
The Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra is currently in its 94th season, which makes it one of the oldest orchestra’s in the country. And while it only makes sense that it should be, it is an extremely contemporary organization and is one of the leading orchestras in the region. The company originated with a 30 piece amateur ensemble composed of recreational players that grew into the professional 75 member orchestra that it is today. The concerts take place at Memorial Hall and most of them are extremely inviting to audiences of all ages. This is a great family oriented activity and it is one of the popular ways for tourists to spend their evenings.
The Pirate Cruises are another extremely popular family oriented activity. One of the great things about a lot of the contemporary attractions of Plymouth is their focus on family friendly fun. This is one type of cruise that is offered by Plymouth Cruises Lobster Tales who also provide wine tasting, ice cream cruises and sunset charters. The Pirate Cruises are particularly popular with young people and includes treasure hunting and face painting among its other kid friendly fascinating features. This is definitely something you won’t want to miss if you’re planning to take your family to Plymouth.
Jackie Chan and Hong Kong
01 July 2010
The appeal of Hong Kong is obvious, not to say it’s not mysterious, to anyone who’s ever set foot here. It’s a spectacularly interesting place, and the word most used to describe it, perhaps, is cosmopolitan. It’s at the forefront of so many things on a global scale. Finance, literature, film, visual art, theatre, and dance are just some of the things that the city is known for. It has a power that attracts artists, entrepreneurs, and thinkers from all over Asia, and the rest of the world, too. One of its most remarkable characteristics, in fact, is the truly global sensibility that exists here.
This sensibility is perhaps no better expressed in the work, and the art, of Jackie Chan . He was born here in 1954, and has one of the most eventful biographies of any movie star who ever lived. Starting from the very beginning, at birth, his mother required a surgeon, because he weighed 12 pounds. A very large and powerful beginning for a large and powerful figure on the silver screen.
From the ages of 10 to 17, he was a student at the Chinese Drama Academy. This was a very disciplined place, where boys were trained to work in the very honored tradition of the Peking Opera. By the time he graduated, however, the popularity of the Opera had dropped off to where he had to look for work in other areas. Without sufficient academic training, he had to use his strength, and worked as a stunt man in films, and in construction in Australia, until he was discovered by a Hong Kong director.
This lead to a succession of film roles, which catapulted him into fame as a very charming, funny, and extremely proficient martial arts expert. The rest of this is, of course, a history of box office success, but he never stopped being his true self. A lot of his work outside of film is devoted to charity. He started two foundations, one to help young people in Hong Kong to get scholarships, and the other to help the poor and the elderly in China’s remote regions. He’s also recently been very encouraging to his new co-star, Jaden Smith , who plans to return to Hong Kong to continue studying Kung Fu under Jackie’s teachers. A night at a Hong Kong hotel is a night in the place that formed Chan, making a celebrity who is also one of the world’s true heroes.
