Jackie Chan and Hong Kong

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

The appeal of Hong Kong is obvious, not to say it’s not mysterious, to anyone who’s ever set foot here. It’s a spectacularly interesting place, and the word most used to describe it, perhaps, is cosmopolitan. It’s at the forefront of so many things on a global scale. Finance, literature, film, visual art, theatre, and dance are just some of the things that the city is known for. It has a power that attracts artists, entrepreneurs, and thinkers from all over Asia, and the rest of the world, too. One of its most remarkable characteristics, in fact, is the truly global sensibility that exists here.

This sensibility is perhaps no better expressed in the work, and the art, of Jackie Chan . He was born here in 1954, and has one of the most eventful biographies of any movie star who ever lived. Starting from the very beginning, at birth, his mother required a surgeon, because he weighed 12 pounds. A very large and powerful beginning for a large and powerful figure on the silver screen.

From the ages of 10 to 17, he was a student at the Chinese Drama Academy. This was a very disciplined place, where boys were trained to work in the very honored tradition of the Peking Opera. By the time he graduated, however, the popularity of the Opera had dropped off to where he had to look for work in other areas. Without sufficient academic training, he had to use his strength, and worked as a stunt man in films, and in construction in Australia, until he was discovered by a Hong Kong director.

This lead to a succession of film roles, which catapulted him into fame as a very charming, funny, and extremely proficient martial arts expert. The rest of this is, of course, a history of box office success, but he never stopped being his true self. A lot of his work outside of film is devoted to charity. He started two foundations, one to help young people in Hong Kong to get scholarships, and the other to help the poor and the elderly in China’s remote regions. He’s also recently been very encouraging to his new co-star, Jaden Smith , who plans to return to Hong Kong to continue studying Kung Fu under Jackie’s teachers. A night at a Hong Kong hotel is a night in the place that formed Chan, making a celebrity who is also one of the world’s true heroes.

Hawaii’s Pacific Aviation Museum

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

If you are a fan of history, art and culture, plus planing to visit Hawaii, then you’re in luck! Honolulu is home to the Pacific Aviation Museum, located on Ford Island in the middle of Pearl Harbor . The Pacific Aviation Museum is on a secured military base in the recently renovated Hangar 37, a 42,000 square foot former seaplane hangar that wasn’t destroyed in the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

It is relatively small, for an aviation museum, but the collection of real World War II-era airplanes is outstanding; bringing history alive with the P-40 fighter, a Japanese Zero, a Grumman Wildcat, the SBD Dauntlees dive bomber – famous for its activity in the Battle of Midway, the airplane with which President George H. W. Bush first soloed – the Stearman N2S-3; and the B-25B Mitchell, which is similar to one used in the Doolittle Raid on Japan in April, 1942. In addition, you’ll get to see an authentic F4F Wildcat in the featured in Guadalcanal diorama, while the story of the ‘Cactus Air Force’ is narrated. As you enter the lobby, you’ll be guided to a 200-seat theater and shown a 12 minute movie that documents the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, including historic footage. After visiting the WWII exhibition area, you can test your skills at becoming a WWII pilot in the Aviation Museum’s interactive ‘Combat Flight Simulators’. You’ll be able to simulate flying a plane during take-off and land on an aircraft carrier; defend yourself during a dog-fight with enemy aircraft, a fly around the pacific on patrol.

Alongside the Aviation Museum, you’ll also get to tour the Battleship Missouri Memorial and the USS Bowfin submarine, all of which adds up to a solid day of enjoyment. You won’t have to worry about lunch, just grab a bite to eat at the Aviation Museum’s restaurant, the Laniakea Cafe. There’s also a great little Museum store stocked with everything to do with aviation and Pearl Harbor. If you’re staying at a beach hotel, Hawaii , you may find it hard to leave the beach side, but you’ll find that your experience at the Pacific Aviation Museum will be a most memorable moment as you take a journey back to where America was first attacked by a foreign country.

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Austin, Texas is more than just a state capital, well and when taken into consideration of the state in which it is the capital city this is no small affair, however and with that acknowledged, Austin is a lot more than a capital city. It is cool. That might sound simple, but when you really look at it, it is the best way to describe this medium sized, central Texas city. The city itself is beautiful and has a well planned, well maintained feel to it. This is perhaps due in part to the beautification efforts of Lady Bird Johnson, which the city continues to appreciate and support.

There are various dynamic and progressive cultural and educational establishments that contribute to a dynamic energy in the city. The University of Texas Austin offers more than class work and degrees and many of the school’s facilities are also popular cultural attractions. The university’s mission states that it is dedicated to improving lives and this is evidenced by the various on campus features that are open to the public. From the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center to the excellent performances of the theatre and dance department, the university is one of the city’s solid cultural attractions.

They also notice the amount of live music venues that exist in the city, and this is a fundamental aspect of Austin culture. There are also some great museums in the city, and one at the university of course, that add to the cultural climate of the city. The Austin Museum of Art , Blanton Museum and the Austin Children Museum are all popular attractions for tourists and celebrated cultural establishments for the residents. After visiting Austin, you are likely to agree that one of the best ways to describe it is also one of the easiest. It’s cool.

Salt of the Earth in Hawaii

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

There are plenty of gifts that will delight the senses in Hawaii. The islands have served as a generous home to people for generations, and have also become one of the most attractive paradises on the planet recently. The contemporary delights are found in the tours, the excellent attractions, and the five star Hawaiian hotels that speak directly to the part of the spirit that knows how to receive.

One of the things that makes it so extravagantly welcoming, however, is related to the most elemental aspects of any place. The thing about Hawaii that is very old is also the thing that keeps renewing itself, in a delicate balance that depends on the care and the respect of the people who set foot here. Elemental is the most appropriate word for the place, in fact, because it is in the elements that all the deeper mysteries are found.

Perhaps out of all the wonderful souvenirs that one can take from the place, salt is the most simple, but it is also the most powerful. Salt, of course, is very old, and is found all over the world in every culture. In Hawaii, where everything has its own power and magic, salt, likewise, is a local idea. Here, it’s called alae , or Hawaiian red salt, or sometimes just salt. The term alae refers more to the earth the is mixed with the salt, and is that which gives it its red color. It’s said to give it the special, subtle flavors, as well as to provide some essential, and even elemental, nutrients.

Salt is an important element historically and mythologically, being one of the main ingredients in alchemy. In Hawaii, salt stories relate tales of goddesses and gods speaking, offering mortals some of the secrets to preservation, and means of making the flavors sing. Preservation is linked to immortality, and here, the correspondence is not accidental at all.

Honolulu Theatre for Youth

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Honolulu boasts some of the most extraordinary views that are offered on the earth. Anywhere that the land meets the ocean has a kind of special magnetism, and here, the land is almost as luscious and breathtaking as the ocean itself. Visitors are drawn by the thousands to enjoy all that Hawai’i has to offer, and the Honolulu best hotels make the visit enormously memorable.

It’s rather easy to fall in love with the place, as so many do. That’s one of the big reasons why so many return, year after year. Getting to know the island takes repeat visits, and even for those who are from here, and know it all their lives, there’s always more. There are plenty of attractions, with fabulous restaurants and luaus, and lots of things for the kids to do as well. In fact, Honolulu has an extremely devoted population, dedicated to the community and making it a better place for everyone.

That’s part of the impetus of the Honolulu Theatre for Youth , where its outreach into the local communities serves thousands of residents and visitors every year. They’ve been around for over 50 years now, which is a marvelous track record for a theatre company, and almost unheard of for one that focuses on youth exclusively.

Like any great youth theatre , there are plenty of moments that the grown-ups will also enjoy, but the aim is at the younger crowd. Its mission combines drama with education, and uses the power of theatre to tell stories. Stories always come with points of view, so in the selections of plays, they make conscious efforts to present multiple perspectives, so that the audience can understand the world from different angles.

One-third of the company’s work is new, drawing on the vast creativity of the local dramatists, collaborations with teams of creative players, as well as working with the scripts from playwrights all over the world. It’s certainly worth seeing, if fortune offers the opportunity.

Beaches in Punta Cana

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

The Caribbean’s largest tourist destination is the Dominican Republic, where travelers are drawn in by golf courses and beaches. This small nation on the island of Hispaniola, a part of the Caribbean region’s Greater Antilles archipelago, shares the island with the nation of Haiti. Historically, the territory of the Dominican Republic was the place in which Christopher Columbus “discovered” the New World when he sailed “the ocean blue in 1492.” This is where the boats landed, and where the first permanent European settlement in the Americas was founded — Santo Domingo, which is now the country’s capital and was Spain’s first capital in the New World.

Inside the Dominican Republic, you’ll find the major resort area of Punta Cana and a hotel right for you , in a place known most for its beaches facing the Atlantic and Caribbean.

Punta Cana is home to about a hundred thousand people. The nearest city, the five hundred year old capital of the province of Higuey is about 28 miles away, and takes about an hour to drive the distance. In Higuey, you’ll find the Basilica Catholic Monument, which was constructed in 1962 and designed by two architects from France. The various beaches include on the north side of the cape, Arena Gorda, Bavaro , El Cortecito, Macao and Uvero Alto. To the south side, you’ll discover Cabeza de Toro, Cabo Engano, and Juanillo.

At night, the resorts in Punta Cana present Las Vegas-style show, with talent drawn locally; outside the hotels there are a number of discotheques, as well as more than eighty restaurants and bars, featuring cuisine from India, Thailand, and China. For those missing a taste from home, you’ll even find here a Tony Roma’s and Tommy Hilfiger stores.

Whether it’s night life, lounging on a beach, or diving into an ocean (with 22 diving sites available), you’ll be able to take your pick of ways to relax in this island country.

Orlando’s Mall at Millenia

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

In Orlando, Florida, with a virtual cornucopia of amusement parks and giftshops, there’s no shortage of places to shop. However, if you desire a gourmet experience in shopping, then you’ll head for the city’s Mall at Millenia .

From the mall’s architecture to amenities such as multi-lingual guest services, valet parking, foreign currency exchange, and global shipping through the U.S. Postal office, it’s clear that the Mall at Millenia is not just another shopping center.

The mall strives to create an environment that surpasses the ordinary. It offers the latest runway fashions from London, Milan, Paris, and New York, and broadcasts these fashions on LED screens at the top of 35 foot tall masts. It features such stores as Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s, and Macy’s, but it also has a variety of specialty stores, such as Apple, Coach, Hugo Boss, Crate & Barrel, Abercrombie & Fitch, Juicy Couture, Montblanc, and Z Gallerie. There’s also luxury botiques, too.

There’s no need to leave the mall for lunch, either. It’s “food court” offers quite a selection. You’ll find such restaurants as The Cheesecake Factory, Brio Tuscan Grille, PF Chang’s China Bistro, and McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood Restaurant. After lunch in places like these, you might feel like heading back to the hotel to take a nap in one of the great rooms you can find by clicking here , or you might just revive yourself enough by taking a look at the luxury collections offered by such brands as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Burberry Dior, Chanel, Jimmy Choo, Tiffany & Company, Cartier, David Yurman, Salvatore Ferragamo, and more.

This is a mall you don’t even have to leave to have a satisfying nightlife. If you’ve stayed late, try out the Blue Martini , an upscale martini lounge, a place in which you might start the evening or close out the night.
